The father of modern medicine Hippocrates said “All disease begins in the Gut” and research has now proven this to be true!
The intestinal barrier plays a critical role in human health and disease. It allows for the absorption of nutrients from the food we eat while preventing water and electrolytes loss. It protects against the entry of allergens, toxins, bacteria, fungi, parasites and larger proteins. When this barrier malfunctions, it can cause allergies, inflammation and autoimmune disorders. This is a condition we call “leaky gut.” Essentially our Intestinal wall becomes Permeable – “leaky”
Things that can cause the breakdown of our gut wall (Leaky) are firstly Diet. Typically a Western inflammatory diet – which includes high refined carbohydrates and lack of fermented foods (pre and probiotics).
Other factors that can cause leaky gut are:
- Bacterial, viral, parasitic infections
- Fungal Overgrowth, i.e. Candida
- Heavy metals and mould
- Certain medications like proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics, or NSAIDs
Lifestyle factors – personally I see A LOT of these symptoms
- Chronic stress
- Sleep deprivation
- Inappropriate physical activity, too little or too much (bold, underlined and in Italics – there seems to be a huge trend of “over exercised junkies” at the moment, this can be damaging!!!)
Endogenous factors (which means they’re just things that are going on inside of the body) like:
- Chronic inflammation
- Gut-brain axis problems
One of the key principles in functional medicine is to find out what is causing symptoms or even manifestations like intestinal permeability (leaky gut), It’s far easier to address the cause or even better, the trigger before it leads to a bigger problem. This is why looking after our gut health is so important.
How can we heal Leaky gut? With intestinal permeability, if you remove the triggers causing leaky gut, like fixing your diet, treating the gut infections and managing your stress – the intestinal permeability will take care of itself. One of the amazing things about the cells in our gut is that they regenerate every two to three days (how amazing!!! I love the human body) The cells can regenerate so tight junctions can restore themselves and the intestinal permeability will go away.
Taking a Fire Tonic is just one of the ways we can help keep our tummies in tip top shape, not to mention all the benefits from macerated Ginger and Garlic (both proven to help heal leaky gut) -yaas!
